Latest News from the GLN Jamboree Unit (09 Jul 06 7:52pm)
In July 2007 over 40,000 scouts from all over the world will be coming together for the 21st World Scout Jamboree which will also coincide with the 100th anniversary of Scouting. The Greater London North unit of 4 leaders and 36 Scouts (6 from Southgate) is just a small part of this.

On the 1st -2nd of July we came together again after the first meeting, this time for a weekend. The Southgate Scouts started the weekend doing fundraising on the Saturday morning at St. Johns Church Summer Fete, before moving to the camp at Phasels Wood. The camp was laid out to represent the small area that we would be allocated for the real Jamboree and we soon found out how cramped we would be (especially in the small two man tents that I slept in). There are still discussions over how we are going to fit two weeks worth of clothes (and hair straighteners!) into the tiny kit bags we will be provided with.

Over the weekend we did activities (climbing and archery) in groups and got to know each other a lot more. I now think that I could name everybody in the unit. On Saturday evening the unit split into the different districts and each did a presentation to their own District Commissioner. Unfortunately the Southgate DC (Chris Foster) could not be there so we just did our presentation to everyone. On Sunday morning people gave in design ideas for a GLN Unit badge and a gateway, all of them looking pretty cool.

It now feels the group is coming together well as a Unit and the atmosphere is amazing. Everybody is looking forward to the next event and from here on things can only continue to get better.
