A St George's Day event to remember (07 May 07 8:32am) Southgate District's annual St George's Day activity event proved once again to be an enormous success and the envy of The County.
A year ago a small group of us decided that this year's District Centenary St George's Day was going to be a bit special, an event that we wanted to be meaningful and memorable for our Young People and adults alike. This meant no more marching, saluting and flag waving.
A master stroke was to hold a joint event with our country cousins from Bishops Stortford and District, which gave us a total of one thousand young people and over one hundred adults. That old favourite, Gilwell Park Activity Centre, was the chosen venue.
The months of planning and preparation, which was carefully managed by a few stars, resulted in an amazing day in the sunshine with nearly 50 different activities on offer. Young People were the focus of attention; they even lead everybody in a mass renewal of the Promise.
District Commissioner Chris Foster was delighted with the day. He said "Thanks to an enormous amount of careful planning and preparation, plus some superb help from Leaders and parents, we gave all our Young People a day to remember that was full of fun. challenge and adventure".
He went on to say "During the day I even chanced my arm on the zip-wire, which I quickly learnt was a new upmarket version of the old-style aerial runway".
