Explorer success story (02 Jan 08 10:02pm)
One of Southgate District's biggest success stories in 2007 has been the regeneration of one of the four Explorer Scout Units in the District. During the summer, one of the Units, The Grovers, had to sadly close. However, in its place, a new Unit with a new Leader Team opened up in September.

Already, numbers of Explorer Scouts who regularly attend Monday night meetings exceed 20 (including five original Grovers members), with many older Scouts in the District waiting eagerly for their 14th birthday so they can join.

Explorer Scout Leader, Steve Ward, has been amazed by the surge of interest. He said "They are all so keen and really up for it. We've got a superb programme of events for 2008 and they all seem to want to do everything".

They have mapped out a variety of Unit, District and County activities, and this includes Winter Camp, a Docklands weekend on water, and of course, The Southern 50. The highlight of 2008 for them will be participating in The Irish Scout Jamboree next summer, where they will help celebrate their own Scouting Centenary. Now, I wonder where have you heard that one before?
