Southgate Explorer Scouts have come out on top at this year's Southern 50 Challenge Hike.

Two teams from The Hatters Unit proved to be the fastest in the County having successfully navigated their way around a gruelling 30km course in The Chiltern Hills last february. They had to cope with tough weather conditions whilst working together as a team, and displaying good map reading skills whilst hiking through ten checkpoints in order. They finished in nearly 9 hours and 11 hours respectively.

Not to be outdone, a team of Leaders from the 23rd Southgate won the trophy for being the fastest mixed team to finish the blue riband 50 miles event in just over 15 hours.

This was the 29th annual Southern 50 Challenge Hike, organised and managed by Greater London North Scouts. The event takes place every February with a new route in a different part of the Chiltern Hills.

District Commissioner Chris Foster said "Scouts and Leaders from all over the UK take part in this hugely popular challenge hike every year. They have up to 24 hours to complete their task and is one of the toughest challenges in Scouting and a real adventure for all those who take part. I am very proud of all those from Southgate District who participated and succeeded in this year's event".

Katie, aged 14 said "It was one of the hardest things I have ever done, but I am really proud to have achieved".

The date for next year's Southern 50 has been set for Saturday 14th February 2009.
