23rd Southgate Easter Camp (29 Mar 08 12:56pm)

The 23rd Southgate Scouts went on to Danemead Wood for their Easter camp. Never ones to miss the start of the camping season, the Troop did not expect the weather conditions they met when the camp was first planned.

The whole point of the camp was to work towards our Outdoors Challenge badge which all of those attending gained. Some Scouts even got their Outdoors Plus Challenge badge having built a bivouac and sleep in it in the snow.

We arrived on Friday, it was very cold but it was also sunny. By Sunday the camp was covered in a blanket of snow.

Because of the snow the camp was more challenging than expected. We cooked on open fires and finding dry wood was very difficult. We even cooked our lunch backwoods style. We learned about pioneering and axe & knife skills. We camped in our Patrols.

The woods were brilliant for wide games at night, which we played with the 2nd Muswell Hill Scout Troop who were also at the site. The PL's went on a hike as part of their Expedition Challenge badge training.

A great camp which we will all not forget even if at the time we were cold.
