District St George's Day event (23 Apr 06 9:02pm) Best described in just three words by District Commissioner Chris Foster as "an incredible success".
Over 400 Scouts arrived in Broomfield Park to brave dank and soggy conditions. They were met by professional drummer Mark Walker, who invited them to make music with their home made percussion instruments. This session lasted nearly an hour before our young readers, Jake, Josie and Samantha took centre stage to lead us through a mass renewal of the Scout Promise.
Next up was our special guest, County Commissioner Steve Taylor in his last function before hanging up whatever County Commissioner's hang up. Steve has been managing our County of Greater London North for the past 8 years. He spoke of his pleasure an being invited to such an innovative St George's Day event and how pleased he was to see Scouting growing in numbers in Southgate.
Steve, along with local MP for Southgate/Enfield, David Burrowes, then presented Nancy Ibrahim with her Chief Scout's Gold Award; Matt Baker, Daniel Bush, Ellie Ridgeway and Andrew Thorp with their Duke of Edinburgh's Gold Award; David Ottley with his Queen's Scout Award; finally two local heroes Tom Nagle and Paul Coleman were presented with The Scout Association's Silver Cross Award for an act of extreme gallantry when they rescued a man from drowning in high seas last summer. The rescue was featured in a national Scout news report. The pair also made Scout news this week with details of their entry in the Devizes to Westminster canoe race. The Duke of Edinburgh Award article may also be seen on David Burrowes website.
The afternoon was wrapped up with more drumming led by Mark with the grand finale being a giant conga!
More about the day can be seen in the Fozzy on a Friday report this week on the national Scout website.
