Southgate is a historic suburb located in the London Borough of Enfield, known for its rich heritage, green spaces, and close-knit community. Nestled in North London, Southgate is well connected by public transport, including the iconic Southgate Underground station with its Art Deco design.
Our District is home to 11 active Scout Groups, each offering programmes for young people aged 6 to 18 through Beaver Scouts, Cub Scouts, Scouts, and Explorer Scouts. With over 500 young people participating across our District, Southgate Scouts provides a safe and supportive environment where they can learn skills for life.
We’re proud of our team of 120 dedicated volunteers, who work tirelessly to deliver high-quality activities and support for our members.

Scouting in Southgate has a proud legacy that dates back to the early 20th century, with some of the District’s earliest Groups forming in the 1910s and 1920s. As the Scouting movement rapidly grew following its establishment in 1907 by Lord Baden-Powell, Southgate’s vibrant and growing suburban community embraced its values of self-reliance, adventure, and service. Many of our Groups have been integral to the fabric of the area for over a century, creating a strong bond between Scouting and the wider community.
During the Second World War, Scouting in Southgate adapted to support the national effort. Local Scouts participated in initiatives such as collecting salvage materials, supporting air raid precautions (ARP), and assisting with community resilience efforts. Stories are still told about Southgate’s Scouts setting up first aid points during the Blitz and delivering messages for the Home Guard.
In the post-war years, as Southgate transitioned into a thriving suburban area, Scouting played a pivotal role in providing structure, community, and adventure for young people during a time of rebuilding and growth. Camps in Epping Forest and trips to Gilwell Park (the international home of Scouting) were highlights for generations of Southgate Scouts. The movement also encouraged young people to actively engage in civic life, with many Scouts participating in projects to enhance local green spaces and restore historical landmarks.
An enduring anecdote involves the 1st Southgate Scout Group, one of the District’s oldest Groups, which famously staged a charity bike relay in the 1960s, raising funds for a local children’s hospital. Their efforts captured the community’s imagination, inspiring more local fundraising events that continue to this day.
Southgate Scouts have consistently been at the forefront of environmental initiatives, from tree planting in Grovelands Park to conservation projects in Trent Park, working alongside local councils and organisations. These projects have not only enriched Southgate’s green spaces but also fostered a deep connection between Scouts and their environment, instilling a commitment to sustainability.
The District’s annual St George’s Day Parade, a long-standing tradition, sees hundreds of Scouts and volunteers marching through the streets of Southgate. It serves as a reminder of the values of Scouting and the strong community spirit that defines the District. Another highlight is the biennial Southgate District Camp, where all 11 Groups come together for a weekend of activities, camaraderie, and shared experiences at Scout Adventure Centres.
In recent years, Scouting in Southgate has evolved to reflect the diversity and modernity of the local community. With its inclusive approach, the District welcomes members from all backgrounds, ensuring that Scouting continues to provide skills for life and opportunities for all.
From supporting the community during moments of challenge to celebrating its achievements through adventure and service, Southgate Scouts have truly shaped the area’s history, leaving a lasting impact on its people and places.

Southgate District is overseen by a District Lead Volunteer and supported by a team of volunteers who manage programme delivery, events, and Group support. Each Scout Group operates semi-independently, guided by volunteer leaders who organise weekly meetings, camps, and adventures for their members. Explorer Scouts, our provision for older teens, is coordinated across the District to offer a diverse programme.
